Black and Gold
In from the Steppe, Ny Space, Manchester, 27 September – 03 October 2014 Curators Michael Branthwaite and Janine Goldsworthy’s concept of the opening show at Ny Space was based on the Steppe, a grass land inhabited by nomads whose lives mean they wonder and move from place to place adapting to each situation; occasionally they encounter ‘civilized’ settlement and come ‘in from the steppe’. The group exhibition featured work by Jude Lin, Nicola Smith, Stuart Edmundson, Evangelia Spiliopoulou, Janine Goldsworthy, Jenny Steele and Michael Branthwaite. What does it mean to show the documentation of a performance after the actual event? Curator Stephen Kelly invited me to perform the piece originally at the live performance After Hours program. I devised multiple micro performances and public interactions for two hours in the project space windows of the CFCCA. This work was inspired by a residency I undertook in 2009 in Chongqing, China and a playful interpretation of the chinoiserie aesthetic.
